Tasting Notes

Today’s beer is Hello? Yes!, a Czech Pale Lager that started life as the 2024 National Homebrew Club winning recipe created by David and Richard Boland — a beer you personally judged in the competition. After taking the top spot, Third Barrel brewed it on their system to share with the wider world, keeping the heart of the homebrew intact while giving it professional polish.

Appearance: Bright pale gold with excellent clarity and a crisp white head. A textbook Czech-style pour.
Aroma: Soft Saaz-like herbal spice, gentle floral hop notes, light cracker malt and a clean lager freshness.
Flavour: Delicate bready malt, subtle sweetness, and a rounded herbal hop character. Light bitterness delivers that classic Czech snap without overpowering the finish. Clean, balanced and quietly expressive.
Mouthfeel: Light-bodied but satisfying, smooth carbonation and a refreshingly crisp finish. Exceptionally drinkable.

A beautifully made pale lager with a brilliant backstory, brewed with precision but true to its homebrew roots.

About the Brewery: Third Barrel Brewing

Third Barrel Brewing is one of Ireland’s most creative and consistently interesting independent breweries, known for everything from hop-forward hazy beers to experimental dark ales and barrel-aged releases. Based in Dublin, they’re driven by flavour, craftsmanship and a willingness to push boundaries. But they also have a huge appreciation for brewing tradition — which makes their Czech Pale Lager project all the more meaningful.

By taking a National Homebrew Club winning recipe and scaling it up for production, Third Barrel highlight the passion and talent within Ireland’s homebrew community. The brewery kept the core recipe intact, refining it gently to suit their system while preserving the balance and drinkability that made the beer stand out in judging. The result is a crisp, nuanced pale lager that honours both Czech brewing techniques and Ireland’s own grassroots beer culture.

Style Spotlight: Czech Pale Lager (Světlé)

Czech Pale Lager is all about subtlety, balance and precision. It sits lighter than a Czech Pilsner but heavier in flavour than a German Helles, offering a softly floral hop profile with delicate malt sweetness.

Key Characteristics:

  • Pale gold colour with excellent clarity
  • Bready, lightly sweet malt character
  • Herbal, floral hop notes (often Saaz-driven)
  • Rounded bitterness, smooth finish
  • Sessionable ABV

Hello? Yes! captures these classic elements beautifully while still feeling fresh and modern.
