5L Mini Kegs: Which Beer Keg Should You Choose?

Looking for an easy way to serve draught beer at home? A 5L mini keg gives you just under nine pints, with no bulky machine and very little setup. They are ideal for a gift, a BBQ, a match night or a small get-together—and TheCru.ie has a rotating range of Irish craft, German and international 5L kegs to choose from.

Is a 5L keg the right choice?

Choose a 5L keg when you want a fresh draught-style pour without committing to a beer machine. One keg holds 5 litres—just under nine pints—so it is a manageable format for sharing, or for enjoying across a weekend. It is also one of the easiest beer gifts when you know what style someone likes.

What is in the current 5L range?

Our range changes with availability, but you will usually find a mix of crowd-pleasing lager, classic German beer and more distinctive Irish craft kegs.

  • Easy-drinking lager and pilsner: familiar options such as Heineken, Bitburger, Krombacher and Warsteiner are a safe choice for parties and casual get-togethers.
  • German beer styles: look out for Hefeweizen, Kölsch and seasonal Festbier when you want something a little more characterful but still very approachable.
  • Irish craft 5L kegs: Brehon is the standout current option, with choices including red ale, IPA, porter and special barrel-aged stout releases—excellent for a beer lover or a more considered gift.
  • Something special: stronger Belgian or barrel-aged kegs are best for sharing slowly with people who enjoy bigger, more intense beers.

Do you need a machine or tapping equipment?

No. The 5L kegs in our mini-keg collection are self-contained, with a built-in tap. Chill the keg thoroughly, allow it to settle upright after travel and follow the instructions on the individual product. No beer machine is required for an easy pour at home.

5L keg, PerfectDraft or Blade?

All three give you a home-draught experience, but they suit different occasions.

  • Choose a 5L mini keg for the simplest option: no machine, little setup and a manageable amount of beer. Shop 5L mini kegs.
  • Choose PerfectDraft if you want a dedicated chilled beer machine and a larger 6L keg range. Explore PerfectDraft kegs.
  • Choose Blade if you regularly have people over and want 8L kegs in a countertop beer machine. Explore Blade kegs.

A few tips for a better pour

  • Chill the keg properly before opening; warm beer will foam.
  • Keep it upright and give it time to settle after transport.
  • Choose the beer style for the occasion: crisp lager for a crowd, wheat beer for a BBQ, or a Brehon craft keg for someone who wants to try something more interesting.
